Panorama of Rovinj and excursion around the Rovinj islands
Guide to the natural, cultural and historical beauties of Rovinj that you can see on the tour!
The Old Town …
…rises up on a peninsula and is a witness to times gone by and the valuable accomplishments of its past artisans. The limited space led to the construction of narrow buildings, streets and small town squares.
Of particular interest in this town centre are the characteristically designed chimneys. The town itself was declared a cultural monument in 1963.
The church of Saint Euphemia
is a most imposing structure which bears the name of the patron saint of the town. It dominates the whole old town centre. It was built in the eighteenth century, while its façade in Venetian-baroque style was added in the middle of the last century. At the top of the sixty-metre-high bell tower stands the copper statue of St. Euphemia, which shows the direction of the wind by turning on a spindle
The town walls and gates:
By the seventh century AD, Rovinj was already surrounded by town walls, and later strengthened by the construction of towers. The old town had seven gates, while three still exist today: the Saint Benedict Gate, the Portico and the Holy Cross Gate. A baroque archway called “Balbijev luk”, which today serves as the entrance into the old town, was built on the site of the former outer gate in the seventeenth century.
The “Zlatni rt” Forest Park
Together with Dubrovnik’s Trsteno park, the “Zlatni rt” is the most important park on the Croatian side of the Adriatic.
Apart from thousands of indigenous and domesticated plants, such as the groves of holm oaks and Alpine pines, the deep shade in this age-old park is also created by many foreign plants, such as the cedar, the pine and some ten species of cypress, which all contribute to the park’s distinctly Mediterranean atmosphere.
The lighthouse “St. John at sea”(Sv. Ivan na pučini)
„St. John at sea” lighthouse, built in 1853. It is located on the most distant islet of the small archipelago in front of Rovinj. This islet is actually a 70 x 50 meter rock with a relatively easily accessible shore and shallow waters. The 23 m high lighthouse tower offers fabulous view.. The islet has a berth where smaller boats can be pulled out with a crane. At the lighthouse there is a weather station and more recently apartments for tourists.
Rovinj Islands – Red island(St. Andria and Maškin), St. Katarina, Šturago, St. John
These natural sights have been justly described as “outstanding scenic wonders,” because of the pristine beauty of the indented coastline and its forests, consisting of holm oak and Alpine pine trees. This area “of outstanding natural beauty” extends from St. Ivan promontory to Barbariga, including all the Rovinj islands and the mainland 500 metres from the shore line.
